David Mathews is widely experienced in the development of occupational standards and vocational qualifications, and has carried out studies in primary health care in the UK and the hospital sector in Italy.
A work psychologist, he was one of the pioneers in developing, implementing and evaluating the practitioner-based methodology of occupational standards development in the UK. His contribution includes techniques for analysing the culture and values of occupational groups in public, private and voluntary sector organisations. He is the author of guidance on methodology for developing occupational standards, on project management and on the management curriculum, and has developed a range of techniques for consultation with and engagement of stakeholders/practitioners.
He has developed competence models for boards of directors (Standards for the Board, Institute of Directors) and occupational standards for senior management (the MCI Senior Management Standards) in collaboration with Henley Management College and a variety of public and private sector organisations, for the administrative arm of the Probation Service and Probation Service trainers in collaboration with the Home Office and for primary health care teams (with Sheffield University and the NHS). Development of competences in other sectors has included housing, special needs housing, construction and environmental conservation.
David has an MSc in Applied Psychology and is a member of MOSAICO, the European Multidisciplinary Association for Learning. He is an experienced facilitator and has a particular interest in work values as they impact on people’s behaviour and how well they fit and prosper in different work cultures, including different national cultures. In this latter role he is an associate of Futuretobe, a subsidiary of The Consultant Connection.
David is currently providing technical consultancy within The Management Standards Consultancy’s project developing a competency framework for Renal Healthcare.
