Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards

DANOS Standards

The Management Standards Consultancy developed the Occupational and Functional Maps for the Drugs and Alcohol Sector during 2001. These were published as annexes to the report A Competent Workforce to Tackle Substance Misuse available from Skills for Health.

From 2001 - 2006, we have developed the Drugs and Alcohol National Occupational Standards. DANOS units describe all the functions and activities involved in improving the quality of life for individuals and communities by minimising harm associated with substance misuse.

Standards and Qualifications for Advanced/Senior Practitioners

Skills for Health appointed The Management Standards Consultancy to investigate whether there is a need for a level 4 qualification for advanced/senior practitioners in the drugs and alcohol field and, if there is, what this qualification should cover. In light of the findings, the project has developed new units to fill gaps within existing National Occupational Standards (NOS) and integrate these into existing awards or create new qualifications, if required.

The DANOS4 Steering Group has now approved new standards for advanced/senior practitioners and recommended how these should be used in qualifications.

DANOS - Three Years On

On the third anniversary of the publication of the DANOS standards, The Management Standards Consultancy carried out a survey of people's experiences of the standards: how were they using them, what problems did they come across and how were these being addressed, what did they perceive as the benefits for organisations, workers and service users, which issues would need to be addressed in the future?
