Palliative Care for Heart Failure Patients

The Cardiac Networks Coordinating Group of Wales appointed The Management Standards Consultancy to identify the National Occupational Standards (NOS) and National Workforce Competences (NWCs) required by those providing palliative care to heart failure patients throughout Wales.

Through a literature review, interviews and a workshop with subject matter experts, a draft Functional Map and Gap Analysis was developed showing all the functions necessary to support and care for patients with advanced heart failure and their families, together with hyperlinks to the relevant NOS/NWCs. This draft was tested through workshops and e-mail consultation before being finalised in September 2009.

These NOS/NWCs can now provide the basis for organisational and job role development as well as a structure for the training and professional development of staff.

The Management Standards Consultancy is currently working with the Cardiac Networks Coordinating Group and Cardiff University School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies (SONMS) to develop a distance education programme for the palliative care of heart failure patients.
