In 2002, the Institute of Internal Auditors - UK and Ireland (IIA) commssioned The Management Standards Consultancy to develop two open learning modules to help internal auditors develop their skills in - Communication and Client-Auditor Relations
- Effective Delivery of an Audit.
Every student of the practitioner level examinations (PIIA) must study these modules and also attend a two-day skills development workshop associated with each skills module. The combination of skills modules and workshops has proved a highly popular and effective way of helping internal auditors develop the essential interpersonal skills to complement their technical expertise.
With the review of the membership examinations (MIIA) in 2005, Trevor Boutall of The Management Standards Consultancy was asked to develop a new skills module to reflect the range of higher-level skills that Heads of Internal Audit and other senior internal auditors need, both to lead their teams and to manage relationships with chief executives, board members, members of audit committes, external auditors and a host of other stakeholders.
The resulting Leadership and Faciliation Toolkit will shortly be published by IIA and will be required reading for all MIIA candidates from 2006 who must also attend the leadership and facilitation skills development workshop, developed in partnership with Marian Lower, IIA's Education Development Adviser.
