Quality is important to everyone - ourselves, our friends and colleagues, the communities in which we live and work and society at large. For many of us, our experience of quality initiatives has done little to enhance the quality of our lives. Quality systems and standards sometimes appear to be bureaucratic bolt-ons which actually get in the way of achieving organisational objectives and delivering quality services and products. Quality initiatives are often seen as the latest fad and compete with systems and processes which are already functioning effectively. This open learning module, available from MAPS Ltd as part of the Performer software suite, is about integrating quality systems and standards into the work of your organisation in order to deliver excellent products and services and enhance individuals’ experience of work and life. It considers what is meant by quality, why quality is important and what the implications are for your organisation. It looks at some of the most commonly-used quality systems and standards - ISO 9000, EFQM Excellence Model, Investors in People, Best Value and National Occupational Standards - the relative advantages of these systems and how they can be used in complementary ways. Finally, the module helps you decide what quality initiatives you should introduce to your organisation, and develop a plan for doing so.
This module is not designed for people who are quality specialists - much of the content of this module would be already familiar to them. This module is for you if quality is just part of your role. Perhaps you are an operational manager and need to ensure that your part of the organisation delivers quality services or products. Perhaps you run your own business and feel that it is time you developed systems to ensure your customers are satisfied. Or you may be part of a larger enterprise which is introducing quality initiatives and you would like to know more about them and how you can use them to make your work more effective. Whatever your role, this module will help you understand quality better, and decide how you can align the various initiatives with your own and your organisation’s objectives.
