Using Resources Effectively

Trevor Boutall, Management Charter Initiative, 1997. ISBN 1-897-587-61-9

This open learning module, available from MAPS Ltd as part of the Performer software suite, is about making sure that you get the resources you need and that you, and your team, use them in the most efficient way possible. Much of this module is about money, since this is the common currency which we use to measure the value of resources. However, the same principles apply whatever the resource - premises, equipment, materials, goods, services, people, information, energy, finance or time. Good management is about using these resources to the full.

As a manager, you have objectives to achieve and you need resources in order to achieve them. This continuing professional development module will help you identify just what, and how many of which resources you need. It will help you decide whether you can afford these resources and plan for their use. You will have the opportunity to practice negotiating for your resources and agreeing budgets which make sense for you and for your section, department or organisation. Finally, you will become familiar with a number of techniques for monitoring and controlling your budgets and taking corrective action when things do not go quite to plan.
